Are tankless water heaters worth it?
Tankless, or "on-demand," water heaters heat water as it flows instead of keeping a 40 to 50 gallon tank hot around the clock. They are popular for good reason, but they are not the right call for every home. Here is the honest breakdown.
How much do tankless water heaters save?
Because a tankless unit only fires when you open a hot tap, it does not waste energy keeping stored water hot all day. For most homes that means roughly 30 to 60 percent lower water-heating energy costs compared with a standard tank. The exact savings depend on your usage and your fuel, but the monthly difference is real and adds up over the life of the unit.
How long do they last?
This is where tankless really pulls ahead. A typical tank water heater lasts about 8 to 12 years. A well-maintained tankless unit can run 20 to 25 years, often double the lifespan. Over two decades that can mean replacing one tankless unit instead of two or three tanks.
So why hasn't everyone switched?
A few honest reasons. The upfront cost is higher than a tank, and installation can require upgrades to gas lines, venting, or electrical depending on the unit. A single tankless unit also has a flow-rate limit: run several hot showers plus the dishwasher at once and a small unit can struggle, which is why sizing matters. For larger households we sometimes recommend a larger unit or more than one. None of these are dealbreakers, they are just reasons to size and install it correctly.
Should you repair or replace your existing heater?
A good rule: if your tank is near or past 10 to 12 years, leaking from the tank itself, or failing repeatedly, replacement usually beats another repair. A unit that is younger with a single failed part, like a thermostat or element, is often worth repairing. We will tell you straight which one your situation calls for, and we set the thermostat around 125 degrees for safe, efficient hot water.
