4 signs you have a hidden water leak
A hidden leak rarely announces itself with a puddle. It hides behind a wall, under a slab, or underground, quietly running up your bill and soaking your home until the damage is expensive. The good news: hidden leaks leave clues. Here are the four clearest signs, and what to do about them.
1. Your water bill jumped for no reason
The single most reliable sign of a hidden leak is a water bill that climbs while your habits stay the same. A steady drip behind a wall or under the foundation runs 24 hours a day. If this month looks far higher than the same month last year and nothing changed, water is going somewhere you cannot see.
2. You can hear water running when everything is off
Turn off every faucet, appliance, and fixture in the house, then stand still and listen. A faint hiss, trickle, or running sound, especially near copper pipes or walls, often means water is escaping a line. Copper in particular can carry the sound of a leak through the pipe.
3. Unexplained moisture, warm spots, or mold
Damp drywall, a warm spot on the floor, peeling paint, a musty smell, or mildew with no obvious cause all point to water where it should not be. A warm patch on a slab floor frequently signals a hot-water slab leak underneath.
4. Low pressure or a moving meter
A sudden drop in water pressure can mean water is leaking out before it reaches your tap. To confirm, find your water meter and watch the dial with everything off. If it keeps moving, you have a leak on the line.
How to isolate it yourself, just to be sure
Shut off every fixture and check the meter. If it still moves, the leak is on your main or supply line. If you shut off the valve to the house and the meter stops, the leak is inside; if it keeps moving, it is between the meter and the house. This tells us where to look before we ever cut into anything.
Why pinpointing matters before any repair
The worst thing a plumber can do is start cutting floors and walls hoping to find the leak. At Rush Plumbing & Rooter we use electronic leak detection to pinpoint the exact location first, then make a clean, targeted repair. That means less demolition, lower cost, and no guesswork. Caught early, a hidden leak is a small fix. Ignored, it becomes rot, mold, and a slab repair.
